An Ordinary Person with a Simple but Extraordinary Life

As a father, motivational speaker, and teacher, a large percentage of my life is around an age group of humans that can often be influenced by the words I say and the actions I take. I see this responsibility as a blessing, as it consistently challenges and motivates me to be the best role model that I can be.
Through my speaking company (M&P Presentations LLC), my best friend, Matt and I travel around the country reminding all age levels that having self-confidence, choosing a healthy lifestyle, and practicing a positive outlook on life tends to make almost everything better in our lives. As a professional speaker for almost 5 years now, this message to live up to has dramatically changed my life for the better. We don’t want to just preach a message that we only occasionally follow, but want to embody the message and be living proof that we are consistently trying to better ourselves and the world around us.

So what does this have to do with the rest of the world? My hope is that this becomes a pep talk to remind you that you are a role model to many! And with a modern and busy world, how can someone be an effective role model? I think the answer is quite simple; take the time to be good to yourself in these four ways and the rest will follow.
1. Become comfortable in your own skin by trying new experiences. This can further develop self-confidence by being out of your comfort zone. Every new experience I try has a fresh energy to it that inspires and motivates me. Just recently I started running my son’s Lion Cub Scout Den. Being in charge of topics like citizenship, health, and public service for 5-year-olds has led to some awkward conversations and a great time for reflection on what I truly believe. This self-awareness and the rowdy scout meetings only helps me become more comfortable with who I am.
2. Learn new things. Lifelong learning is inspiring, creative, and can lead us to undiscovered passions. Through speaking, I meet incredible directors of teen institutes that spend their entire careers helping with prevention in our youth. The knowledge they pass along to me backed by their passion simply inspires me to continue spreading our speaking message to others. It never hurts to be a lifelong learner!
3. Find balance with your eating, sleeping, and exercise. Our moods, work ethic, energy, and patience are greatly affected by these three. Before my speaking partner and I have a presentation, we always conscientiously eat extra clean and stay regimented with our workouts and 7-8 hour sleep patterns. By choosing to be healthy, my mind is clear and my energy is unstoppable. I do everything better; including being a helpful husband, an enthusiastic father, a supportive friend, a motivated employee, a dynamic presenter, and a positive human. 4. Find balance with your emotional self and feel the beauty of a normal day. It is easy to instill a sense of gratitude when enjoying time with friends and family and taking the time to live in the moment. This is my favorite part of being alive! I get to watch my children be excited about holiday lights in our neighborhood. I get to laugh often with the teenagers I teach in Physics and Chemistry. I get to snuggle up on the couch with my beautiful wife on Friday nights to watch 30 minutes of a movie before we both accidentally fall asleep. I get to travel around the country talking to wonderful people about how I am an ordinary person that feels so grateful to have such a simple, but extraordinary life.

Once you begin to focus on you and your well-being, you naturally start to push others to do the same without even knowing it. So if you want to be the best role model you can be, in my opinion, simply start working towards living a happier, healthier life. Your words, actions, and energy will do the rest. Thanks for being you….and here’s to the even better, more powerful role model you will be tomorrow! Continue to have a great day friends!
